MCP for customer support teams

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI client such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor call tools in another application. For a support team, it means asking an assistant to summarise the queue, find a customer's history or draft replies without opening the helpdesk. This guide explains what a helpdesk's MCP server should offer and what to check before you connect one.

What is MCP, in plain terms?

A common way for an AI application to discover and call the tools another service offers. Anthropic published it as an open standard in November 2024, and clients including Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code now support it. A helpdesk that runs an MCP server describes its tools, such as searching tickets or drafting a reply, and the AI client decides which ones to call to answer your request.

What can a support team do with it?

Whatever the server's tools allow, asked in plain language. Typical requests:

  • Summarise today's queue and list what has waited longest
  • Find every conversation with this customer and what we promised them
  • Draft replies to the open threads about the billing change, for review
  • Check whether our documentation answers this week's questions
  • Count this month's conversations by topic

Which actions should an AI client never have?

The ones that cannot be undone, and the ones that reach many customers at once. A model can be steered by text inside the very tickets it reads, so a server is safe because of which tools exist, not because of instructions. Be wary of a server that lets a client close, delete, reassign or mass-send. Reading, searching, drafting for review and leaving internal notes are low risk. Sending a reply is the one write worth approving each time.

What should I check before connecting a helpdesk's MCP server?

Six questions settle most of it:

  • Which plan it is on: some vendors list their MCP server only from a mid tier
  • Whether it is hosted, or a package you install and keep running yourself
  • How it authenticates, and whether you can revoke a client's access
  • Which tools write, and whether any of them send to customers
  • Whether drafts and proposed changes wait for a person to approve them
  • Whether calls are rate limited, and whether they use up an AI allowance

Which helpdesks have an MCP server?

Of the six helpdesks compared on this site, as checked in September 2026: Intercom runs its own MCP server, Crisp lists one from its Essentials plan, and Zendesk, Freshchat, tawk.to and Chatwoot do not offer one. miniDesk includes one on every plan, including the free one. The comparison pages carry the details and their sources.

How does miniDesk's MCP server work?

It is hosted at api.minidesk.ai/mcp, so there is nothing to install. It exposes thirteen tools: nine read and four write. The four writes are a draft for review, a reply to one customer, an internal note and a proposed document that stays off until an owner approves it. There is no tool to assign, resolve or close a ticket. A workspace owner connects a client with a token from Settings.
